چکیده

Plantar ulceration is a significant problem in leprosy patients and accounts for a large proportion of hospital admissions. Three methods of sensory testing were employed to see if a high-risk group of people with loss of protective sensation might be selected, so that the serious first ulcer might be prevented . Three groups of patients were studied : 4 1 leprosy patients with ulcers, 4 1 without ulcers and 48 control subjects without leprosy. The results show that either or both Semmes-Weinstein nylon monofilaments and biosthesiometer may prove a more reliable method of sensory testing than the standard WHO pencil stimulus.

The threshold for protective sensation that prevents neuropathic ulceration on the plantar aspect of the foot: a study of leprosy patients in a rural community in India.

The protective sensation threshold is an important concept in the prevention of plantar ulceration in leprosy patients. Previous studies have suggested that skin with sensory nerve damage on the plantar aspect of the foot which can still detect the 5.07 Semmes-Weinstein monofilament (approximately 10 g) is highly unlikely to develop ulceration. While the threshold is thought to be less than the...

Can people affected by leprosy at risk of developing plantar ulcers be identified? A field study from central Ethiopia.

In the ALERT leprosy control programme, 75 people affected by leprosy, in three different geographical areas, were investigated. Each person was documented as having anaesthesia to the 10 g monofilament. The study sought to determine why some people developed ulcers whilst others did not. According to the records, 43 had an ulcer during the last 5 years but 32 had never had an ulcer. In order t...

Plantar sensory threshold in the ulcerative foot.

Pressure threshold measurements were made using a set of three Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments on 1 32 plantar u\cer sites in 72 leprosy patients and 45 plantar u\cer sites in 28 diabetic patients. The most common sites of u\ceration were the great toe and first metatarsal head. No patient could feel monofilaments smaller than 6 · \ 0 (75 g) . The next smallest filament, 5 ·07 ( 1 0 g), was iden...

Trophic ulceration of the foot treated with intra-arterial hydergine.

Trophic ulceration of the foot is one of the commonest complications of leprosy, and one whose treatment presents many difficulties. The peripheral neural involvement causing loss of sensation, tactile and thermal, leads indirectly to ulceration especially of the feet due to (a) traumatization of the anesthetic area, usually over a bony prominence, and (b) an adjuvant deformity, e.g., a talipes...
